The Atys marketplace

Added by Hekla about 1 year ago

Fellow homins!

As you are no doubt aware, Kreios, Dennycrane and others have been making an effort to provide lower-level equipment on the shops, for the benefit of hominlings fresh off Silan. This is a much-needed effort, as it can be hard for the younger of us, sometimes, to find what they need.

Additionally, several of us have been thinking that it would be a nice social activity to stage regular marketplace events. There are multiple benefits to that:

  • Make customers free of guild pressure, as many newcomers feel indebted to guilds for crafting them equipment for free.
  • Provide the stage for a social event, with the possibility for other activities/events to take place on the side.
  • Be an opportunity to create a new caste of pure crafters, who'd spend Atys weeks collecting mats to have them ready for orders on market day.
  • Let intermediate crafters have an opportunity to craft for lower rates, and meet professional crafters.
  • Provide an opportunity for harvesters to be present and provide materials, creating a professional relationship between crafters and harvesters.
  • Due to the presence of many crafters, provide customers with greater choice and the possibility for customized equipment (choice of armor types and color, etc.).
  • Let homins bring their own materials to crafters if they want to (or purchase them from harvesters).
  • In the end, foster the development of a thriving economy.

Obviously, the buy/sell rates will have to be determined according to workable standards, but that should develop of its own, over time. For information, the "breakeven" point for NPC mats are currently set at 300%.

Some rules should be established as well, to make the marketplace lively and fair:

  • Chat locally as much as possible, especially when establishing crafting needs and prices (be that Dappers or materials). Create chatter.
  • Be respectful of all others at all times. Let competition between crafters be real, but not disdainful.
  • Crafters may shout to advertise their services, within reasonable limits so everymin still has time to follow what's going on.
  • Crafters must wear their crafting titles at all times. Rotate titles if necessary.
  • Crafters of all levels above 50 are welcome. Diggers of all levels above 50 are welcome.
  • To prevent wasting materials, higher-level crafters should leave orders too low for them to lower-level crafters (when applicable).
  • Crafters and harvesters are encouraged to bring full Packer(s) along, so no porting around or running back to apartment is necessary. If a crafter is low on mats, harvesters should be able to provide it for Dappers or mutually beneficial exchanges.
  • No exchange should be made without a counterpart, so the recipient does not feel in any way bound to the crafter or harvester.
  • Crafters are invited to stand within a reasonably short distance of one another, in a clear and visible area.
  • The market event will be open for business for a little less than two Atysian days (~2 RL hours). Crafters are invited to stay during the full duration of the market activity, if possible.

Yours, Hekla

[ The first market event will take place in Fairhaven, south of the Stables, on Saturday, August 8, 2009, between 20:00GMT and 22:00GMT. It will become a weekly event. We should discuss whether it would be useful to stage marketplaces in other capital cities eventually, either simultaneously, or as a rotation. ]

The first trade fair had a good turnout, with 8 crafters and about as many customers. Although offer seems to be higher than demand at the moment, there is no doubt the trade fair responds to a need, and allows for a nice level of social interaction. Lower-level crafters (most notably jewel crafter Mioshani) were able to proudly sell their work publicly.

Overall, the meeting was loose and friendly, even a little disorganized due to homins not always having all materials at hand, especially when it came to Amplifier crafting. But all demands were met in the end.

The next trade fair will take place in Fairhaven again, and its duration will be cut to a single Atys day. Location of the following fair(s) will be discussed then. We are hoping to start thinking about a price grid in the meanwhile, and will aim to establish a Dapper standard for trades.

[ Second trade fair to be held in Fairhaven, Saturday, August 15, 2009, between 20:00GMT and 21:00GMT. ]

Well, it seems most homins were not awake for the last fair, so we're hoping this fair to have better activity. Meet at the regular time, and tell your friends!

After the unraveling of the corruption of the Akenak councils in Pyr, few homins were in the mood for the fair. Few crafters gathered around the Stables in Fairhaven, and they barely met demands.

Since discussion on the location of the Trade Fair hasn't picked up here, I thought we'd try to rotate the Fair over the next few weeks, to see how that would work. Some have voiced resentment that it's been only held in Fairhaven thus far. So we'll have the next one in Zora next week, then in Pyr, then in Matis, so nomin can say it's lil Hekla's own silly, egocentric event. I only meant to put in it enough energy to get something regular going, because I think it may be needed.

Yours.

[ Dates and locations:
8PM GMT on Saturday, September 5th, in Zora
8PM GMT on Saturday, September 12th, in Pyr
8PM GMT on Saturday, September 19th, in Yrkanis
8PM GMT on Saturday, September 26th, in Fairhaven
The fair will be held one hour later if there is a conflicting event. ]

The last few fairs gave homins a better feel for needs in the different lands. While it merely amounted to standing around in Zora, one or two homins did pass by in Yrkanis, and a couple of sympathetic chatters in Pyr. The Trade Fair in new Trykoth, however, gathered quite a few customers and crafters, and soon became busy with chatter and requests, every time it was held there. There wasn't, as of yet, popular demand to hold the Fair exclusively in one land. But it became obvious that Fairhaven was indeed a popular place, fit to host such an event.

Hekla hoped the question would be discussed at the meeting of the Taliar next time; surely the Taliar would be pleased to have such an event held regularly, in their homeland. It would, after all, be a strong selling point for travel agencies, and increase Tryker pride. And certainly travelling to the capital city of New Trykoth is a good thing for all hominlings, whatever their civilization origin, or creed.

Hekla looked up. The nymphae trees were hovering softly in the Loria breeze.

Something in her was broken. It had happened when she witnessed the wreck that was Twilight Rest. Past the initial shock, she had tried clear the Goo-infected Stingas and the crate that a wandering Tryker abandoned carelessly, in the very middle of the cave. No mektoub would make it budge. She had been outraged to see this unique landmark, known only to few Trykers, was desecrated and left to ruins. She had looked up to see the sky through the opening above, from which you could see the stars in the twilight. Was it really here that Artisans had held their poetry reading, long ago? Was it really here that the farewell to Solara had taken place?

She had come back to Fairhaven. Rumors had come to her of meaningful events in faraway lands, of retaliation against old friends, of greed and treachery. Nomin came to the trade fair that day. Why bother? The kinchers were running the asylum. She grabbed a Grespick and went to dig.

The nymphae trees fluttered slightly. Their anchors would stay put.

Sadly the kitin swarming prevented me and many others from reaching lovely Fairhaven in time for the market, we can only hope the swarming can be controlled quickly so normal operations can resume.

I hope to be able to spend some time before the next fair collecting quality materials to serve young homins and hominettes with equipment they can be proud of posessing, and hope many will join me in this and in attempts to bring others to Fairhaven in time for the next fair who cannot yet make the dangerous journey through the prime roots, maze, Bounty Beaches, and Loria on their own.

For such journeys, I am quite willing to assist my meager skills a a priestess and elementalist.

Yours, Iala (and Ankha too).

Can a homin hope to see the Atys marketplace back? I may not like water, but I'd swim all the way to Fairhaven to see such an event happen again!

RE: The Atys marketplace - Added by Iala 5 months ago

I certainly do hope so. Maybe you, with your growing base of regular readers, can help promote such an event and coordinate between interested participants.
Next weekend may be an unfortunate time given the easter weekend and (possible??) associated events of course.

My organisational talents are sadly somewhat lacking or I'd take up organising it myself, but I'd be happy to lend a hand in any way possible.

While I would love to contribute with promotion, communication and whatever else is needed, I don't think I'm the most suited person to organize something like this. I'm just a beginner crafter and forager myself and don't know the ins and outs of the trade. And I don't have as many contacts with the community of crafters. However if someone else is interested to get it going again, I'd definitely help as much as possible.
